    A concise, clear, overview of English history from the pre Roman period through the beginning of the Tudor dynasty Henry VII The style is dispassionate and dry, so it s not as exciting to read as popular histories, but it s also not highly partisan If anything, Lander gives the impression he likes all things English, so he tends not to take sides in controversies within England, but rather treats them with care and nuance The work was actually a little too concise, as it makes passing reference to Ireland as an English dependency at one point without in any way expanding on that or explaining how the English first got involved in Ireland Given the amount of time, money, and trouble the English put into pacifying Ireland over the centuries, and what a controversy all this became by the 20th century, one would think Lander would at least devote a page or two to it He does explore England and France s dynastic claims on one another, so he is capable of sorting these sorts of things out.The occasional map and picture are included and these are beneficial to clarity While Lander refutes many Marxist conclusions about English history, he still approaches much of it from Marxist premises, e.g., he analyzes English society from a class based perspective, examines class conflict, etc One of the overarching themes was of the change from essentially local government to centralized, efficient, and reformed government, whic...
